Characters are well constructed, you can clearly understand why they do what they do, why they say what they say. The play is saturated with historiosophic pessimism and seems to turn its back on socially or historically conditioned forces, seeing hope in what is individual. The Stomils and the other denizens of their household are representative characters, quasi-allegorical figures that mirror contemporary European types.
